Baseball vs. Southern Virginia

LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore third baseman Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) batted 3-for-6 with two homeruns and seven RBI to lead the Washington and Lee baseball team to a 19-8 victory over Southern Virginia on Wednesday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

Plantholt's two dingers ties the program record for homeruns in a game, most recently achieved by Taylor McConnell '05 against West Virginia Tech in 2005. Additionally, Plantholt's seven RBI tie the second-best performance in a game by a General since Christian Batcheller '99 racked up seven RBI against Guilford in 1998.

The Generals (16-6) took 19-3 lead after four innings, aided by Plantholt's roundtippers, and maintained a double-digit edge for the duration of the contest. Senior rightfielder James Madden (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) hit 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and three RBI, while junior centerfielder Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) was two-for-three from the plate with a triple and one RBI. Senior catcher Dan Harris (Longwood, Fla./Lake Brantley) went 3-for-5 with two doubles and one RBI. Junior righthander Steve Marcott (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) picked up the win (2-0) as he started the contest for the Blue and White and gave up just three hits and one earned run in four innings of work.

SVU (9-13) was paced by second baseman Logan Mann (Fayetteville, N.C./Jack Britt), who batted 1-for-2 with a double and three RBI. Designated hitter Grant Woods (Dallas, Texas/Canyon Del Oro) posted two hits in four at-bats with a double and two RBI. Righthander K.C. Maughan (Beavercreak, Ore./Oregon City) took the loss for the Knights after hurling 1.2 innings and allowing seven hits and eight earned runs.

W&L returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Guilford for an ODAC doubleheader. The first game will begin at noon.
