LEXINGTON, Va. – BC second baseman Aaron Read's (Lynchburg, Va./Heritage) two-run single in the top of the eighth broke open a tied game and led Bridgewater to a 9-3 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC baseball action on Tuesday at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
Bridgewater (12-9-1, 5-3) put up a single run in the both the first and second innings before senior rightfielder James Madden (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) scored on an error by Read to cut BC's lead to 2-1. BC added another run in the top of the sixth, but sophomore catcher Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) registered an RBI single and then scored on a fielder's choice to tie the contest, 3-3. However, the Eagles then put up four runs in the top of the eighth, beginning with Read's single as they pulled away for the win.
W&L (15-6, 7-4) was paced by Madden's 3-for-4 performance from the plate with two doubles and Lewis, who hit 1-for-3 with one RBI. Junior righthander Andrew Henderson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace) was saddled with the loss (0-1) after giving up four hits and two earned runs in just one inning of work.
Read batted 2-for-4 from the plate with a double and four RBI for the Eagles. First baseman Drew Elkins (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) went 3-for-5, while leftfielder Michael Lenox (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) had two hits in five at-bats with a double and an RBI. Lefthander Fred Duquette (Manassas, Va./Osborn Park) hurled a complete game for BC (4-1), allowing seven hits and one earned run.
W&L returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Southern Virginia at 3:00 pm.
