Mathews Sends No. 8 Generals Past Roanoke, 14-9

LEXINGTON, Va. – Freshman midfielder Emily Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) tallied five goals to help lead the eighth-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team to a 14-9 win over Roanoke College on Thursday evening at the W&L Turf Field.

Mathews scored four goals in the opening 21:35 of the game as the Generals (7-1, 3-0) raced out to a 7-1 lead with 8:25 left in the first period. Roanoke sophomore attacker Brooks Laufman (Annapolis, Md./Severn) scored unassisted at the 7:43 mark to make it 7-2, but the Generals added two more before the break and held a 9-3 lead at the half.

The Maroons (3-5, 1-2) scored three of the first four goals of the second half, including a pair by sophomore midfielder Gina Valles (South Windsor, Conn./Westminster), to make it a 10-6 game with 16:03 remaining. However, Roanoke could get no closer the rest of the way as the Generals hung on for the five-goal victory.

Junior midfielder Colleen Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) supplemented Mathews' effort with three goals and one assist, while sophomore attacker Britten Mathews (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) posted two goals and two assists. Junior attacker Kelsi Robinson (West Chester, Pa./Westtown) added a pair of goals. Senior Sarah Tilbor (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) played all 60 minutes in goal and totaled 10 saves.
