BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Junior centerfielder Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) and freshman leftfielder Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut Hill) combined to bat 9-for-9 with three RBI as the Washington and Lee baseball team upended Bridgewater, 11-8, on Wednesday afternoon at Jopson Field.

The Generals (13-3, 5-1) took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning as McKelvey scored on an error by BC shortstop Mitchell Edwards, sophomore first baseman Hunter Serenbetz (Stamford, Conn./Taft School) plated senior rightfielder James Madden (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) on a sacrifice fly and sophomore third baseman Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) totaled an RBI single. Bridgewater responded in the following frame with two runs, but the Generals racked up five runs over the next four innings to take an 8-4 lead after the top of the fifth.

Bridgewater (7-5-1, 2-1) rallied as second baseman Aaron Read tallied an RBI triple in the bottom of the fifth and Edwards and designated hitter Drew Easter both homered in the bottom of the sixth to help tie the contest at 8-8. The Generals managed to pull away, however, as Madden had an RBI ground out in the top of the seventh to give W&L the lead for good (9-8) and then he provided the Generals with insurance in the top of the ninth with a two-run double that gave the Blue and White an 11-8 win.

McKelvey batted 5-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while Cardona went 4-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBI. Madden finished the day with three RBI, batting 1-for-5. Senior lefthander Jeff Pharis (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) picked up his first win (1-0) of the season as he hurled 2.2 innings and allowed just two hits and two earned runs. Additionally, Plantholt tossed the final inning, picking up his third save of the season and seventh of his career, tying W&L's career save mark (7 - Matt Reedy 1993-96). Plantholt struck out two BC batters in the bottom of the ninth to help the Generals secure the win.

The Eagles were led by centerfielder Mike Graves, who had two hits in three at-bats with two RBI. Leftfielder Michael Lenox went 2-for-4 from the plate with a solo homerun. Righthander Chris Gramm (2-2) took the loss, surrendering six hits and three earned runs in 2.2 innings of work.

W&L returns to the diamond on Saturday when it travels to Lynchburg College for an ODAC doubleheader. The first game is slated to begin at noon.
