LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior center Ben Strong (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead 13th-ranked Guilford to a 65-52 victory over Washington and Lee in ODAC men's basketball on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.
The Generals (14-10, 10-7) opened up a six-point lead (20-14) with 7:32 left in the first half, but went cold from the floor over the next 20 minutes, making just five field goal attempts as the Quakers pushed out to a 46-30 lead at the 7:18 mark of the second half.
W&L closed the gap to 54-48 on a layup by junior guard Chris McHugh (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) with 1:06 left in the game, but Guilford (20-4, 15-2) went 11-for-12 from the foul line the rest of the way to hold on for the 13-point win and clinch the top seed in next week's ODAC Tournament.
The Generals shot just 33.3 percent (20-60) from the field, including hitting just 3-of-23 (.130) three-pointers. Guilford also held a 42-33 advantage on the boards.
Senior forward Greg Bienemann (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) paced W&L with 17 points and eight rebounds. In the process, he moved into seventh place on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,528 career points. McHugh tied his career-high with 15 points, while junior guard Isaiah Goodman (Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels) notched 10 points. Senior forward Femi Kusimo (Cross Lanes, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) chipped in four points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Strong's effort was supplemented by 12 points from senior forward Eric Belkoski (Rockingham, N.C./Richmond Senior) and six points and 11 rebounds from sophomore forward Tyler Sanborn (Elkin, N.C./Elkin).
Washington and Lee concludes the regular season on Saturday as it travels to Bridgewater for a 7:00 pm contest.
