LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's basketball team fell to Ferrum, 59-44, on the final day of the W&L Men's Basketball Classic. Muskingum defeated Roanoke, 83-79 in overtime, in the day's first game.
The Generals (1-1)Â held a slim 24-22 advantage at the break behind 10 points from senior guard Chris McHugh (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and a stingy defense that forced 11 Ferrum turnovers and held the Panthers to just 37.5 percent shooting in the opening stanza.
Ferrum opened the second half on a 14-6 scoring run over the first 5:41 to grab a 36-30 lead that it would not relinquish. A pair of free throws by junior forward Ben Goetsch (Timonium, Md./Gilman) pulled the Generals within three at 40-37 with 9:37 remaining, but that would be as close W&L would get the rest of the game.
W&L was led by McHugh's 10 points, while senior forward Ben Heller (Houston, Texas/Lamar) and junior forward Zac White (Baltimore, Md./Park School) added nine points and three rebounds apiece. Senior forward Ryan Owens (Floral Park, N.Y./Chaminade) led the Generals with six rebounds and White added a pair of blocks.
Ferrum received a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds from sophomore forward Derek Mitchell (Newport News, Va./Heritage). Junior guard Jerrell Wade (Ferrum, Va./Franklin County) added 16 points and three steals for the Panthers, who held W&L to just 30.0 percent shooting (15-50) from the floor.
In the early game, Muskingum withstood a late rally by Roanoke and defeated the Maroons, 83-79, in overtime.
Roanoke, down by five at the half, came back in the second period to tie the game on the strength of 20 second-half points from senior center Curtis Peery (Salem, Va./Salem), before ultimately falling to the Muskies. Muskingum senior guard Pat Byrne (Cambridge, Ohio) scored 10 of his 14 points in the second half and senior guard Trevor Scott (Loudonville, Ohio) netted a game-high 27, including a 10-for-10 showing at the line. Senior forward Tyler Felt (Cambridge, Ohio) added 18 points and 11 boards for the Muskies and senior forward Aaron Tyson (Dallas, N.C./North Glaston) chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds for the Maroons.
Following the conclusion of the second game, Zac White of W&L and Derek Mitchell of Ferrum were among the players selected to the all-tournament team, they were joined by Roanoke's Curtis Peery, and Muskingum's Trevor Scott and Tyler Felt. Felt was named the Tournament MVP for averaging 20.5 points and 10 rebounds in two games.
Washington and Lee returns to action when it travels to Catholic on Wednesday for a 7:00 pm game.
