LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee ended the first half on a 14-2 run en route to a 66-57 win over Muskingum in the first game of the W&L Men's Basketball Classic on Saturday afternoon at the Warner Center. Roanoke knocked off Ferrum in the second game by a score of 73-65.
The Generals (1-0) led 24-20 with 5:30 left in the opening stanza, but successive three-pointers by senior guard Chris McHugh (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and junior forward Zac White (Baltimore, Md./Park School) over the next 52 seconds ignited the half-ending run that gave W&L a 38-22 lead at the break.
The Muskies (0-1) chipped away at the lead, eventually cutting it to a six-point game at 57-51 with 2:28 remaining. However, W&L pushed back out to an 11-point advantage (63-52) with 48 seconds remaining in posting the win.
Senior forward Ryan Owens (Floral Park, N.Y./Chaminade) paced four Generals in double figures with a career-high 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor. He also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. White tallied 14 points and grabbed a career-high seven rebounds, while McHugh also notched 14 points. Junior forward Ben Goetsch (Timonium, Md./Gilman) chipped in 10 points.
Muskingum was led by senior forward Tyler Felt (Chambridge, Ohio), who notched game-highs in both points (23) and rebounds (9). Senior forward Pat Byrne (Cambridge, Ohio) tallied 12 points and seven boards, while senior guard Trevor Scott (Loudonville, Ohio) posted 11 points.
In the second game, Roanoke jumped out to a 26-5 lead in the opening 9:34 of the game in posting a 73-65 win.
The Maroons led by as many as 22 points (48-26) in the second half only to see the Panthers close to within six points at 69-63 with 39 seconds remaining. Ferrum could get no closer, however, as the Maroons closed out the eight-point victory.
Roanoke was led by senior center Curtis Peery, who tallied 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Melvin Felix notched 12 points, while sophomore forward Matt Crizer added 11 points.
Ferrum, which shot just 23.7 percent in the first half and 31.2 percent for the game, was paced by junior guard Keith Crump's 18 points and six rebounds. Sophomore forward Derek Mitchell notched 12 points and 18 rebounds, while junior guard Justin Henderson and junior guard Jerrell Wade chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Washington and Lee will entertain Ferrum College at 4:00 pm in Sunday's second day of the W&L Classic. Muskingum will take on Roanoke College in the other game at 2:00 pm.
