LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Senior designated hitter Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) batted 4-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI as Washington and Lee eliminated Randolph-Macon from the 2007 ODAC Baseball Tournament with a 12-5 win at Lynchburg City Stadium.
The Generals plated four runs in the bottom of the first inning on the strength of an RBI triple from sophomore centerfielder Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) and an RBI double from Garland, but the Yellow Jackets responded with all five of their runs in the top of the third inning aided by a two-run double from freshman centerfielder J.C. Conway to take a 5-4 lead.
However, W&L then exploded for six unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as a two-RBI double from Garland and a two-run single from junior rightfielder James Madden (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) helped give the Generals a 10-5 cushion and lead to the 12-5 final margin.
W&L (18-13) was led by Garland and Madden, who went 1-for-4 with two RBI. McKelvey hit 2-for-5 with one RBI, while senior second baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) had three hits in four at-bats. Sophomore righthander Brendan Clark (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) improved to 3-0 on the season as he pitched 3.1 innings and allowed just three hits and no earned runs before giving way to junior lefthander Jeff Pharis (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) and freshman righthander Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford), who closed out the contest.
Randolph-Macon (19-20-1) was paced by sophomore designated hitter Charlie Hartt's 2-for-5 performance from the dish with an RBI and Conway, who batted 1-for-4 with two RBI. Sophomore third baseman Greg Meleski hit 2-for-4 with an RBI, while freshman righthander Matt Tiller took the loss (1-2) after giving up five hits and four earned runs in 3.2 innings of work.
W&L returns to action on Saturday for the third round of the double-elimination 2007 ODAC Baseball Tournament. The fifth-seeded Generals will take on an opponent that will be determined by today's later games at 3:00 pm at Lynchburg City Stadium.
