LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney first baseman Josh Michael batted 3-for-5 with a triple, a homerun and two RBI as the Tigers defeated the Washington and Lee baseball team, 7-3, in the first round of the 2007 ODAC Tournament at Lynchburg City Stadium.
W&L (17-13) tallied its first run of the contest in the top of the opening inning as a sacrifice fly from senior designated hitter Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) plated sophomore centerfielder Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip), but H-SC quickly knotted the score in the bottom of the first with Michael's solo homerun to left field. The Generals took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third when senior shortstop Ray Sweeney (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) scored on a passed ball. However, Hampden-Sydney (23-16) registered three runs in both the bottom of the third and fourth innings aided by two W&L errors and an RBI triple from Michael to extend its lead to 7-2 and secure the win.
The Generals were led by McKelvey, who hit 2-for-3 with a double, and junior leftfielder Tim Livingston's (Los Angeles, Calif./Santa Monica) 3-for-3 performance from the dish. Senior second baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) had two hits in five at-bats, while senior righthander Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) was saddled with the loss after tossing 5.0 innings and allowing 10 hits and six earned runs along with six strikeouts.
Michael's outing was complemented by shortstop Todd Harrell, who went 1-for-3 with an RBI, and designated hitter Ben Brawley, who totaled one hit in four at-bats and an RBI. Larry Greene improved to 5-4 as he hurled 7.0 innings and allowed seven hits and one earned run.
W&L returns to action on Friday for the second round of the double-elimination 2007 ODAC Baseball Tournament. The fifth-seeded Generals will take on the sixth-seeded Randolph-Macon (18-19-1) at 11:00 am at Lynchburg City Stadium.
