W&L Baseball Splits Doubleheader With R-MC

ASHLAND, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team split an ODAC doubleheader with Randolph-Macon on Saturday afternoon at Hugh Stephens Field. The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 4-3, but the Generals responded to win the nightcap, 11-5.

In the first game, the Generals put one run up in the top of the first inning when sophomore centerfielder Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) scored on an error by R-MC leftfielder David Jayne. R-MC responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning off a two-run homerun from second baseman Joey Crawford and held a 2-1 lead entering the top of the seventh frame. In the top of the seventh inning, a two-run double from McKelvey gave W&L a 3-2 lead, but the Yellow Jackets also plated two runs in the final frame as rightfielder J.C. Conway scored on a passed ball and an RBI single from third baseman Charlie Clarke with one out gave R-MC the win.

McKelvey went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while senior shortstop Ray Sweeney (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) batted 1-for-2 with a double. Freshman righthander Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) took the loss (2-3) as he allowed two hits and two earned runs in the seventh frame.
Crawford led R-MC, going 2-for-3 with the two-run homerun and Hartt posted a 2-for-4 performance from the dish with one RBI. Lefthander Dillon Sheads picked up the win as he came into the game in the seventh inning as relief for lefthander Kurt Breitmeyer and allowed two hits and one earned run.

In the second contest, W&L held a 4-0 lead after plating one run in the first and three more in the second on the strength of back-to-back doubles by Sweeney and senior second baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton). R-MC scored single runs in both the bottom of the third and fourth inning to cut the W&L advantage to 4-2. However, the Generals retaliated with one score in the top of the sixth inning off an RBI single from Miller and then erupted with five runs in the top of the seventh inning aided by a two-run single from freshman leftfielder Jon Ditore (Shoreline, Wash./Bishop Blanchet) and a two-run double from Sweeney as they extended their lead to 10-2. R-MC fought back with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't manage to complete the comeback as another run in the top of the ninth for W&L put the game away.

Miller posted three hits in six at-bats with two doubles and four RBI, while Sweeney hit 3-for-4 with three doubles and three RBI and Ditore batted 4-for-5 with two RBI. Junior righthander Tim Livingston (Los Angeles, Calif./Santa Monica) won his first game of the season (1-0) as allowed five hits and two earned runs in four innings of work.

Designated hitter Greg Meleski led R-MC (17-17-1, 7-9), batting 2-for-5 with one RBI and a double, while Conway hit 2-for-3 with one RBI. Righthander Matt Tiller was saddled with the loss (1-2) as he threw 6.2 innings and allowed 12 hits and eight earned runs.

The Generals (17-12, 11-7) return to action on Thursday in the 2007 ODAC Baseball Tournament at Lynchburg City Stadium. The seeds and game times have yet to be determined.
