W&L Baseball Drops Doubleheader To Hampden-Sydney

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team lost both games of an ODAC doubleheader to Hampden-Sydney on Thursday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field. The Tigers won the first game, 3-1, and the nightcap, 7-6, despite a late Generals' rally.

In the first game, the Generals scored their lone run of the contest in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single from senior designated hitter Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights). However, the Tigers plated single runs in the top of the third and fourth innings on a solo homerun and RBI double from junior third baseman Josh Michael (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) and then added an insurance run in the sixth inning to secure the win.

W&L was led by Garland, who went 1-for-2 with an RBI, and junior rightfielder James Madden (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park), who batted 2-for-3. Senior righthander Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) fell to 5-2 on the year, hurling seven innings and allowing nine hits and two earned runs.

Michael paced H-SC with a 3-for-4 performance from the dish with two RBI, while freshman designated hitter Ben Brawley (Leesburg, Va./Loudon County) batted 2-for-3. Senior Larry Greene (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) pitched six innings and allowed just three hits and one earned run as he improved to 4-4 on the season.

In game two, the Tigers had a 2-0 lead entering the bottom of the third inning, but W&L knotted the score with an RBI double from senior second baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) and an RBI single from freshman catcher Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) in the third frame. The Generals took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as a sacrifice fly from Lewis plated sophomore centerfielder Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip), but the Tigers would register four runs in the top of the seventh inning, including a two-run double from Michael, and added a single score in the top of the ninth to make it 7-3 entering the final frame.

In the ninth inning, the Generals made a comeback as their first three batters registered hits, including an RBI single from McKelvey that cut the lead to 7-4. Miller then scored on a wild pitch and a Madden single drove home McKelvey to tighten the score to 7-6, but despite having the bases loaded with two outs the Generals couldn't plate the tying run.

Lewis paced W&L (16-11, 10-6), going 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Madden and Miller each batted 3-for-5 with an RBI apiece. Freshman righthander Chuck Davidson (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) took the loss (1-2) as he threw 6.2 innings and totaled six strikeouts, while allowing seven hits and three earned runs.

The Tigers were led by Michael's 2-for-4 performance from the plate with two RBI. Junior shortstop Todd Harrell (Chesapeake, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk) hit 2-for-5 with two RBI. Junior Daniel Hadra (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) improved to 5-2 overall as he pitched eight innings and allowed nine hits and one earned run.

The Generals return to action on Saturday when they travel to Ashland, Va., for a doubleheader with Randolph-Macon. The first game is slated to start at 1:00 pm.
