GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Guilford leftfielder Byron Myers' bases-loaded single with two outs in the bottom of the tenth inning plated the winning run as the Quakers topped the Washington and Lee baseball team, 8-7, on Tuesday afternoon at Edgar McBane Field.
The Generals (16-9, 10-4) got on the board in the top of the first when sophomore centerfielder Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) scored on a wild pitch, but Guilford (11-21, 4-10) responded with six unanswered runs, including two RBI singles from catcher Phil Drew, to take a 6-1 lead entering the top of the fifth inning.
W&L cut into the Quakers' lead in the top of the fifth frame, as an sacrifice fly from senior catcher Jordon Wesley (Winston Salem, N.C./ R.J. Reynolds) scored senior second baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton). However, GC scored off another RBI single from Drew, to extend its lead to 7-2 after the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Blue and White responded with an RBI single from Wesley in the top of the seventh inning and three runs, two of which scored on an error and a wild pitch, in the top of the eighth to slice the GC advantage to 7-6. The Generals continued their comeback in the top of the ninth as Miller hit an RBI single to right field, knotting the contest, 7-7, forcing extra innings and setting-up Myers' game-winning heroics.
W&L was led by Wesley, who hit 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Miller, had two hits in four at-bats and one RBI. McKelvey batted 4-for-6, while junior rightfielder James Madden (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) went 2-for-5. Freshman righthander Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) was saddled with the loss (2-2) after coming into the game in the eighth inning.
Drew led the Quakers, going 3-for-4 at the dish with four RBI, while shortstop Drew Ward was 4-for-4 with one RBI. Chad Boone pitched 2.1 innings and allowed four hits and no earned runs as he improved to 1-2.
W&L returns to Thursday when it faces Hampden-Sydney. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 1:00 pm.
