W&L Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader With Roanoke

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team took both games of an ODAC doubleheader over Roanoke on Saturday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field. The Generals won the first game, 3-1, and the nightcap, 11-6.

The Maroons got on the board early in the initial game with a run in the top of the first inning on an RBI single from second baseman Brennan Thacker (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest), but the Generals responded with two runs in the bottom of the second inning on RBI singles from junior rightfielder James Madden (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) and junior leftfielder Tim Livingston (Los Angeles, Calif./Santa Monica). Senior catcher Jordan Wesley (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) added an insurance run for W&L in the bottom of the sixth frame when he smacked a solo homerun to right center.

The Generals were led in game one by Wesley and Madden, who each went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Livingston hit 1-for-2 with an RBI and senior designated hitter Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) was 3-for-3 from the dish. Senior righthander Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) improved to 5-1 on the season as he tossed a complete game, allowing just four hits and one earned run.

RC was paced by Thacker, who hit 1-for-3 with an RBI, and senior designated hitter Shane Spikes' (Salem, Va./Glenvar) 1-for-2 performance from the plate. Junior righthander Jonathan Wills (Salem, Va./Salem) was saddled with the loss (1-5) as he pitched the complete game and gave up seven hits and three earned runs.

In the nightcap, the Maroons exploded for five runs in the top of the second aided by a two-run double from Thacker, but the Generals responded in the bottom of the fourth inning, posting seven runs highlighted by a grand slam homerun to rightfield from Madden. A two-run RBI single in the fifth and an RBI single in the seventh both from Livingston upped W&L's advantage and an RBI double from senior first baseman Nathan Unroe (Iron Gate, Va./Alleghany) in the top of the ninth inning wasn't enough of a rally for the Maroons.

W&L (16-7, 10-3) was led by Madden's 3-for-5 performance with four RBI and Livingston, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Senior second baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) had two hits in four at-bats and an RBI, while sophomore centerfielder Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) batted 2-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI. Sophomore righthander Brendan Clark (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) notched his second win (2-0) of the season, allowing just two hits and no earned runs in 4.0 innings.

Unroe paced Roanoke (6-17, 6-5), batting 3-for-5 with two RBI. Thacker was 1-for-4 with 2 RBI, while sophomore shortstop Alan Moore (Roanoke, Va./Cave Springs) hit 2-for-5 with an RBI. Senior lefthander Chase Davidson (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) took the loss for the Maroons, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing seven hits and seven earned runs.

The Generals return to action on Wednesday when they host Southern Virginia at 3:00 pm.
