LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior designated hitter Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) batted 2-for-4 with a three-run homerun as the Washington and Lee baseball team upended Bridgewater, 7-4, on Tuesday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
The Generals (14-6, 8-3) tallied the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning when a sacrifice fly by junior leftfielder Tim Livingston (Los Angeles, Calif./Santa Monica) plated sophomore first baseman Andrew Henderson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace). The Eagles retaliated in the next frame as a single from freshman rightfielder Mitchell Edwards (Kent's Store, Va./Fluvanna) brought senior shortstop Jono Brooks (Milford, Va./Caroline) home. W&L would then take the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the third inning as sophomore centerfielder Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) registered a triple and then scored on a wild pitch from junior righthander Nolan Shaffer (Hegins, Pa./Tri-Valley). Two BC scores in the top of the fifth inning off an RBI triple from Brooks, who would eventually score on a double from Edwards, gave the Eagles a 3-2 advantage, but the Generals responded as a sacrifice fly from McKelvey sent Livingston home in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The contest was knotted at 3-3 leading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Blue and White broke the game open with a RBI single from freshman catcher Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) and the ensuing three-run homer from Garland. BC managed just one run off a RBI single from sophomore designated hitter Michael Lenox (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) in the top of the ninth, yet it wasn't enough as the Generals held on for the victory.
McKelvey complimented Garland's performance, hitting 2-for-3 with one RBI. Lewis had one hit in two at-bats and also tallied the game-winning RBI. Sophomore righthander Brendan Clark (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) picked up his first decision (1-0) of the season as he allowed just three hits and no earned runs in two innings. Freshman righthander Chuck Davidson (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) started the contest and gave up three earned runs on six hits in 4.1 innings.
Bridgewater (7-13, 4-4) was paced by Edwards' 3-for-5 performance from the dish with two RBI and Brooks, who went 2-for-5 with one RBI. Shaffer took the loss (1-4) for the Eagles, hurling 6.1 innings and allowing five earned runs and seven hits.
The Generals return to action on Thursday when they host Shenandoah at 3:00 pm contest.
