W&L Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Lynchburg

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team took both games of an ODAC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field. The Generals won the first game, 3-1, and then posted a 6-5 come-from-behind win in the second contest.

In the first game, the Generals took a 2-0 lead as a single from sophomore centerfielder Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) scored freshman third baseman Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) in the bottom of the third with the first run. W&L pushed across the second run as it successfully executed a double-steal that allowed senior second baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) to score. The Hornets scored in the top of the sixth inning when junior shortstop Ronnie LaBrie (Vinton, Va./Staunton River) hit a solo homerun to right centerfield, but the Generals added an insurance run as sophomore first baseman Andrew Henderson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace) homered to leftfield in the bottom of the sixth to post the 3-1 victory.

The Blue and White was paced in the opening game by McKelvey, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Henderson hit 1-for-3 with an RBI. Senior righthander Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) improved to 4-1 as he pitched a complete game, allowing five hits and one earned run with six strikeouts.

Lynchburg was led in the first game by LaBrie's 2-for-3 performance. Senior righthander Jason Kelly (Colonial Heights, Va./Colonial Heights) was saddled with the loss (4-2) as he allowed seven hits and two earned runs in five innings of work.

In game two, the Hornets jumped out to a 5-0 lead after picking up four runs in the top of the third aided by a two-run single from freshman centerfielder Cameron Grant (Lynchburg, Va./Heritage). However, the Generals methodically chipped away, getting on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning as a sacrifice fly from Miller scored Edwards. W&L netted a score in the bottom of the sixth inning off an Edwards' single that scored Henderson, and posted two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI double by senior designated hitter Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights), who later scored on an error by LaBrie. The Generals then tied the contest at 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth inning as a Miller single to rightfield scored Edwards. W&L's comeback was capped in the bottom of the ninth as a sacrifice fly by Edwards with the bases loaded plated junior rightfielder James Madden (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park).

Edwards led W&L (13-6, 7-3) in the nightcap, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, including the game-winner. Miller registered two hits in three at-bats and also tallied two RBI, while Garland batted 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Plantholt got the win (2-0) sending the Hornets down in order in the ninth inning. Junior lefthander John Parker (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) started the contest and hurled 2.2 innings before giving way to the bullpen.

The Hornets (13-9, 5-3) were led at the dish by Grant's 1-for-5 performance with two RBI and LaBrie, who was 1-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Junior first baseman Jon Crews (Lynchburg, Va./Heritage) batted 1-for-2 with one RBI. Sophomore righthander D.W. Moore (Lynchburg, Va./Heritage) pitched six innings and allowed six hits and two earned runs, but sophomore righthander Joe Devlin (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) took the loss (1-1) as he tossed the final 0.2 innings.

The Generals return to action on Tuesday when they host Bridgewater at 3:00 pm contest.
