Generals Women's Lax Cruises to 18-2 Win over Averett

LEXINGTON, Va. – Freshman midfielder Meredith Freeman (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Inst. & St. Louis Co. Day) scored five second-half goals as the 10th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team posted an 18-2 victory over Averett on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Generals (6-2) opened the game with nine unanswered goals as they sailed to the 18-2 victory. W&L was led by Freeman's career-high performance and sophomore attacker Katie Flippen's (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) three goals and three assists. Junior attacker Laura Henson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster), sophomore midfielder Colleen Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) and freshman midfielder Natalie Herndon (Smyrna, Ga./Westminster) each added two goals and one assist, while freshman Britten Mathews (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and senior midfielder Kelly Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) contributed one goal and two assists apiece.

The Generals used a trio of goalkeepers as junior Sarah Tilbor (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury), sophomore Ali Hillyard (Media, Pa./Episcopal) and freshman Eliza Van Beuren (Woodville, Va. Covenant) shared the 60 minute contest and each posted one save.

Averett (1-5) was paced by sophomore attackers Krissy Deuterman (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) and Vanessa Jordan (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook), who both scored goals on free-position shots. Freshman Danielle Shields (Manassas, Va./Osbourne Park) played the entire game in the goal for the Cougars and turned away five would-be goals.

W&L returns to the field on Wed., Mar. 28 when it travels to Winchester, Va., to take on Shenandoah at 4:00 pm.
