W&L Baseball Drops Doubleheader To Virginia Wesleyan

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan took both games of an ODAC baseball doubleheader over Washington and Lee on Sunday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field. The Marlins won the first game, 6-2, and the second contest, 6-5.

In the first game, the Marlins jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Generals got on the board in the bottom of the second when an single from freshman third baseman Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) brought home sophomore first baseman Andrew Henderson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace). Virginia Wesleyan responded with four runs in the top of the third and the Generals managed just one more run the rest of the way for the 6-2 final.

The Generals were led in the initial game by Plantholt, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while senior catcher Jordan Wesley (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) hit 1-for-3 with an RBI. Senior righthander Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) pitched six innings and allowed six hits and six earned runs as he registered his first loss of the season (3-1).

VWC was paced by senior catcher Matt Hudgins' (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) 3-for-3 performance from the plate with a homerun and two RBI. Senior leftfielder Ricky Allred (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) hit 1-for-3 with a two-run homerun. Senior righthander Chris Rivera (Chesterfield, Va./Meadowbrook) picked up the win for VWC in the first game as he tossed six innings of six-hit ball and allowed only two earned runs.

In the second game, W&L opened the contest with two runs in the bottom of the first when a double from senior designated hitter Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) scored Henderson and sophomore centerfielder Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip). The Marlins then scored one run in both the third and fourth innings and added three runs in the fifth inning to hold a 6-3 advantage going into the bottom of the ninth inning. The Generals mounted a comeback in the bottom of ninth inning as Henderson led off the inning with a double and Wesley followed an RBI single that scored Henderson and cut the lead to 6-4. Senior second baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) registered an RBI single that scored freshman John Ditore (Shoreline, Wash./Bishop Blanchet), who was pinch running for Wesley, but it wasn't enough McKelvey grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game.

W&L (11-5, 5-2) was paced in game two by Garland, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Henderson also batted 2-for-4 with one RBI, while Miller was 2-for-5 with one RBI. Freshman righthander Chuck Davidson (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) tossed 2.2 innings, surrendering five hits and one earned run, while junior lefthander Jeff Pharis (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) came in to throw the final 2.0 innings of the contest and allowed only two hits and no runs.
