W&L Baseball Continues Winning Ways With 6-3 Triumph Of Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team stretched its winning streak to nine-straight with a 6-3 win over Mary Washington on Sunday afternoon at Dickinson Stadium.

The Generals (11-3) held a 2-0 lead going into the top of the fifth inning, but the Eagles (5-4-1) tacked on two runs to tie the game in the bottom of the frame. W&L scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 4-2 lead and held on despite another UMW score in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut it to 4-3. The Generals put two more runs on the board in the top of the ninth inning en route to the 6-3 final.

W&L was paced by senior designated hitter Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights), who went 2-for-3 and senior shortstop Ray Sweeney's (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) 2-for-4 performance from the plate. Senior Jordan Wesley (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) was 1-for-1 with two RBI, while junior leftfielder Tim Livingston (Los Angeles, Calif./Santa Monica) (2-for-4) and freshman catcher Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) (1-for-3) each added an RBI.

Freshman righthander Chuck Davidson (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) tossed the first five innings of play, allowing just three hits and two unearned runs. Junior lefthander Jeff Pharis (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) came in to throw 2.2 innings and pick up his first win of the season (1-0), while freshman righthander Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) pitched the final 1.1 innings to notch his fourth save of the year.

The Generals return to action on Friday when they welome Villa Julie to Cap'n Dick Smith Field at 3:00 pm.
