LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior third baseman Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) doubled in the bottom of the fifth inning to plate the tying and go-ahead run as the Washington and Lee baseball team posted a 3-1 win over Southern Virginia on Wednesday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
Southern Virginia got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning, registering its lone run of the contest when junior rightfielder Jonathan Mills (Pittsburgh, Pa./CC of Allegheny County South) tagged home on a sacrifice fly by freshman catcher Barrett Price (Georgetown, S.C./Georgetown).
In the bottom of the fifth, SVU freshman righthander Thomas Frazier (Spanish Fork, Utah/Spanish Fork) walked W&L junior rightfielder James Madden (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) and senior designated hitter Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) doubled to set the table for Edward's bases-clearing double. The Generals also added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when sophomore centerfielder Terrence McKelvey's (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) singled to score freshman catcher Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) home.
The Generals (3-3) were led by Edward's 1-for-4 performance from the plate with two RBI and Madden, who went 3-for-4. The Knights (0-13) were paced offensively by sophomore shortstop Greg Larsen (Orem, Utah, UVSC), who went 2-for-3.
Junior righthander Steve Marcott (Cinncinati, Ohio/Xavier) pitched three innings of two-hit ball to pick up his first win of the season, while Frazier was saddled with the loss for SVU after tossing five innings.
The Generals return to action on Saturday when they travel to Emory, Va., to face ODAC-foe Emory & Henry. The double-header is slated to begin at 12:00 pm.
