LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore midfielder Colleen Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) registered four goals and two assists as the 11th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team picked up its first-ever victory over 13th-ranked St. Mary's (Md.), 11-10, on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.
The Generals (2-0) took an early 2-0 lead just 3:16 into the first half, but the Seahawks rallied back to tie it at 2-2 (15:05) and carried a 6-4 lead into the break.
W&L cut into St. Mary's advantage just 22 seconds into the second half as senior midfielder Maggie Megear (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) scored unassisted, but SMC sophomore midfielder Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, Md./Olde Mill) found the back of the net to up the lead to 7-5 with 21:19 to play in the contest. However, the Blue and White responded with five unanswered goals over the next 8:41 to take a 10-7 lead with 11:56 left in the game. The Seahawks scored twice to slice the Generals' advantage to 10-9, but Evans scored again at 5:55 for an 11-9 lead. Carrier's goal at 3:38 wasn't enough and W&L held on for the 11-10 final.
The Generals were led by Evans and sophomore attacker Kesli Robinson's (West Chester, Pa./Westtown) three goals and one assist, including the go-ahead-goal. Senior attacker Kelly Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) tallied three-assists, while Megear recorded two goals and one assist.
Carrier paced the Seahawks with seven goals, while senior attacker Amanda Jones (Annapolis, Md./Severn) accounted for two scores.
Junior Sarah Tilbor (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) and sophomore Ali Hillyard (Media, Pa./Episcopal) split time in the goal for W&L. Tilbor made three saves, while Hillyard stopped four would-be goals. Senior Melissa Puzak (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) minded the net for St. Mary's and made six saves in the loss.
The Generals return to the field on Wednesday when they travel to Salem, Va., to take on Roanoke at 4:00 pm.
