PEORIA, Ariz. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team defeated Hastings College, 16-0, but fell to Trinity (Texas), 13-7, in the final game of the Desert Baseball Classic on Saturday evening at the Peoria Sports Complex.
In the win over Hastings (2-6), senior righthander Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) tossed five innings of three-hit ball to pick up his first win of the season. Sophomore first baseman Andrew Henderson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace) led the Generals at the plate, going 5-for-6 with a double and three RBI. Sophomore centerfielder Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) added a pair of hits in three at-bats. Junior lefthander John Parker (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) and freshman lefthander Hunter Serenbetz (Stamford, Conn./Taft School) combined to hold Hastings hitless in four innings of relief work.
In the nightcap, Trinity (4-6) broke open a 3-3 game with four runs in the sixth inning and five more in the seventh en route to a 13-7 victory. Senior second baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) led the Generals at the dish, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. McKelvey added three hits in five at-bats, including a pair of doubles.
Sophomore righthander Chris Sherwin (Wynnewood, Pa./Episcopal Academy) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits in 1.1 innings of relief.
Washington and Lee (2-3) returns to action on Wednesday as it hosts Southern Virginia for a 3:00 pm contest.
