W&L Baseball Drops A Pair In Arizona

PEORIA, Ariz. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team opened its 2007 season with a pair of losses in the Desert Classic held at the Peoria Sports Complex, the spring training home of the San Diego Padres. The Generals fell to Whitworth (Wash.) in the opener by a score of 10-1, then dropped a 15-7 decision to Hastings (Neb.) in the nightcap.

In the opener, Whitworth (1-4) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and limited the Generals to just four hits in cruising to the win. For W&L, junior lefthander John Parker (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) picked up the loss after giving up five hits and three runs (one earned) in four innings of work. Senior second baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) led the Generals at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.

In the loss to Hastings (1-4), the Generals (0-2) jumped out to a 3-0 lead through two innings, but saw the Broncos score two runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth frame for a 5-3 lead. A lone W&L run in the fifth inning cut it to a 5-4 game, but Hastings tacked on four runs in the sixth inning and five runs in the eighth inning to pull away.

Freshman righthander Charles Davidson (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) tossed 2.2 innings of relief and was saddled with the loss. Junior leftfielder Tim Livingston (Los Angeles, Calif./Santa Monica) paced the Generals at the dish, going 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI. Junior third baseman Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) went 1-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in as well.

The Generals return to action in Arizona on Friday when they face Trinity (Texas) at 5:00 pm (Eastern Standard Time).
