W&L Baseball Knocked Out Of ODAC Tournament By Guilford, 5-4

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Guilford centerfielder Joe John collected an RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift the fifth-seeded Quakers to a 5-4 win over sixth-seeded Washington and Lee in the ODAC Baseball Tournament held at Lynchburg City Stadium.

W&L sophomore lefthander Jeff Pharis (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) retired the first two batters of the 11th inning, but an error by Generals' senior shortstop Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal) kept the inning alive for the Quakers (24-17). After a single and an intentional walk, John laced a shot off the wall that allowed Guilford to advance in the tournament.

The Generals jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by senior first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal), but the Quakers came back with three runs in the bottom of the third frame for a 3-1 lead. First baseman Rob Bittner sent home two runners with a double to left center, while John knocked home the third run with a single to center.

W&L put continuous pressure on the Guilford defense by landing the lead-off runner on base in the fourth, fifth and six innings, but could not pick up a run until junior second baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) scored on a passed ball in the seventh inning to make the score 3-2.
The Generals loaded the bases in the eighth inning but could not push around the equalizer until loading the bases again with two outs in the top of the ninth inning. Senior centerfielder David Mackenzie (Vienna, Va./James Madison) kept W&L's hopes alive with a two-run single that gave the Generals a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth. However, Bittner sent the game into extra innings with a two-out infield single that scored the tying run.

In the 10th inning, W&L again loaded the bases but could not push home the go-ahead run. Pharis retired the Quakers in order in the bottom half of the frame and the Generals stranded two more runners in the top of the 11th inning to increase their game total to 19 runners left on base and set up John's game-winning hit.

Washington and Lee was led at the dish by junior third baseman Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster), who went 3-for-3. Freshman rightfielder Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) batted 3-for-6, while junior designated hitter Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) went 3-for-5. Sophomore John Parker (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) started for the Generals, allowing four hits and three earned runs in 4.0 innings. Pharis pitched the final 6.2 innings in relief of Parker and was saddled with the loss (1-3). He allowed seven hits and just one earned run.
Guilford was paced by designated hitter Jeff Arzonico's 3-for-5 performace. Bittner was 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI, while John batted 2-for-5 with two RBI. Logan Collier started for the Quakers, pitching 7.0 innings and allowing just one earned run on nine hits. Mike Balash earned the win (5-0) after pitching the final two innings.

With the loss, Washington and Lee ended its 2006 season with an 18-15-1 overall record.
