LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Junior righthander Ricky Read pitched a complete game, allowing two earned runs on eight hits with six strikeouts, to lead top-seeded Bridgewater to a 6-2 victory over sixth-seeded Washington and Lee in the opening round of the ODAC baseball tournament on Thursday afternoon at Lynchburg City Stadium in Lynchburg, Va. Read improved to 8-0 with the win.
After each team was held scoreless through the first three innings, the Generals (18-14-1) broke through with a pair of runs in the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead. With runners on first and third, freshman rightfielder Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) had an RBI fielder's choice to score sophomore leftfielder James Madden (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) and advanced to second base on a throwing error by Eagles' freshman second baseman Matt Steele. McKelvey then moved to third on a single by junior third baseman Ray Sweeney (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) and scored on a passed ball.
Bridgewater (27-10-1) got one run in the fifth on an RBI single by junior shortstop Jono Brooks and then took a 4-2 edge with three runs in the sixth, including a two-run double by senior catcher Grant French.
The Eagles then closed out the scoring with two runs in the seventh inning on a pair of sacrifice flies to make the final margin, 6-2.
W&L was led by Madden, who finished 2-for-4 with a run. Senior shortstop Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal) and senior first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) each went 1-for-3 with a double. Junior righthander Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) gave up six runs, five earned, on seven hits with five strikeouts in seven innings to suffer the loss (6-2).
For the Eagles, French batted 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBI, while Read went 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI.
