W&L Baseball Defeats Roanoke, 9-1

SALEM, Va. -- Sophomore lefthander John Parker (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) allowed one run on one hit with three strikeouts in five innings to lift Washington and Lee to a 9-1 victory over Roanoke in ODAC baseball action on Wednesday evening at Salem Memorial Stadium. Parker improved to 2-3 on the season with the win.

The Maroons (14-16, 5-9) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice bunt by senior designated hitter Sean Sturgill and held the lead until the fourth inning when the Generals scored five runs. Junior second baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) smacked a two-run single in the frame.

W&L (17-9-1, 9-5) then plated a single run in the fifth inning to push its advantage to 6-1 and capped the scoring with three runs in the seventh, including RBI singles by freshman rightfielder Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) and senior centerfielder David Mackenzie (Vienna, Va./James Madison).

McKelvey led the Generals at the plate, batting 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Miller finished 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI, while junior designated hitter Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.

For Roanoke, junior leftfielder Justin Bradley went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run. Senior righthander Travis Andrews gave up six runs, one earned, on 10 hits in five innings to suffer the loss (4-5).

W&L returns to the diamond on Saturday when it travels to Hampden-Sydney for a doubleheader. The first game begins at 12:00 pm.
