W&L Baseball Sweeps Emory & Henry

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal) tied a school record with five hits (5-for-6), scored a school-record six runs, drove in five runs and hit for the cycle to help the Washington and Lee baseball team to a 23-3 win over ODAC-rival Emory & Henry in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field. The Generals also won the first game, 12-4.

In the second game, the Generals (8-3-1, 2-0) jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the first inning. Junior leftfielder David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) smacked a grand slam homerun, Gosselink hit a three-run blast and senior first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) hit a solo homerun in the inning.

W&L scored four more runs in the second inning and two more runs in the third and fourth innings. The Wasps (0-4, 0-2) tallied three runs over the fifth and sixth innings, but the Generals notched five more tallies in the sixth and seventh innings en route to the 20-run victory.

Gosselink finished with two triples, a single, double and a homerun, while Miller batted 2-for-5 with two runs and four RBI. Junior shortstop Ray Sweeney (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) went 4-for-5 with a pair of runs and junior catcher Jordan Wesley (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) batted 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs and two RBI. On the mound, junior lefthander Johnson Brownlow (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb) allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits with five strikeouts in six innings to pick up the win (1-0).

For E&H, junior first baseman Adam Hall (Abingdon, Va./Abingdon) batted 2-for-4 with two doubles, while sophomore righthander Jonathan Arnold (Mountain City, Tenn./Johnson County) gave up 10 runs on 10 hits in one inning of work to suffer the loss (0-1).

In game one, W&L scored 12 runs on just seven hits, but were helped out by seven Wasp errors. The Generals held a 2-1 lead after two innings, but a three-run homerun by Hall in the top of the third inning gave E&H a 4-2 advantage.

The Generals regained the lead with five runs in the fourth inning, including a two-run single by Wesley. W&L tacked on five more runs in the fifth inning on a two-run double by Wesley and a three-run triple by Miller to close out the scoring.

Wesley finished 2-for-5 with a double, two runs and five RBI, while sophomore leftfielder James Madden (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) batted 3-for-3 with three runs. On the bump, junior righthander Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminter) pitched a complete game allowing six hits with a season-high nine strikeouts to improve to 3-0.

Hall went 2-for-3 with the homerun and three RBI, while sophomore shortstop Gavin Haynes (Clifton Forge, Va./Alleghany) batted 2-for-3 with a pair of runs. Hall also took the loss (0-1) by giving up seven runs, only two earned, on four hits in 3.1 innings.

W&L returns to the diamond on Thursday when it hosts to Southern Virginia at 3:00 pm.
