W&L Baseball Falls To Bridgewater, 11-10

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Bridgewater jumped out to a 10-1 lead after four innings and held on to defeat Washington and Lee, 11-10, in ODAC baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

The Generals (14-8-1, 7-4) scored three runs in the fifth inning, one run in the sixth and five more in the seventh to pull within one run at 11-10, but the game was then called due to darkness following the inning.

W&L took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by junior catcher Jordan Wesley (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds), but the Eagles (16-5-1, 7-1) plated three runs in the second inning, including a two-run single by freshman second baseman Matt Steele (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier). Bridgewater then notched three tallies in the third frame and four more in the fourth, including RBI doubles by junior first baseman Ricky Read (Goode, Va./Brookeville) and junior third baseman Chad Dobbs (Alleghany, Va./Alleghany), to extend its advantage to 10-1.

The Generals sliced the deficit to 10-4 with three runs in the fifth inning on a two-run single by junior leftfielder David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) and a sacrifice fly by Wesley. After an RBI single by Miller in the sixth made it 10-5, Bridgewater got a single run in top of the seventh to push their lead back to six at 11-5. However, W&L plated five runs in the bottom of the frame, including a two-run single by Miller, to creep within 11-10 before darkness ended the contest.

Miller finished 4-for-5 with a run and a game-high five RBI, while Wesley batted 3-for-3 with a run and two RBI. Sophomore righthander Tim Livingston (Los Angeles, Calif./Santa Monica) allowed six earned runs on nine hits in three innings to take the loss (2-1).

Read led the Eagles at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with three doubles, two RBI and three runs. Dobbs went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and three RBI. Junior lefthander Matt Nolen (Lynchburg, Va./Jefferson Forest) pitched 5.2 innings, giving up five earned runs on nine hits to pick up the win (4-0).

W&L returns to the diamond on Sat., Apr. 8 when it hosts Guilford for a doubleheader. The first game begins at 12:00 pm.
