W&L Baseball Splits With Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team spilt a doubleheader with ODAC-rival Lynchburg on Sunday afternoon in Lynchburg, Va. The Generals won the first game, 8-2, but lost the nightcap, 12-1.

In game one, the Generals (14-7-1, 7-3) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by junior catcher Jordan Wesley (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) and increased their advantage to 3-0 in the second inning on an RBI single by junior shortstop Ray Sweeney (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) and a run scoring double by senior centerfielder David Mackenzie (Vienna, Va./James Madison).

The Hornets (14-8, 2-6) got single runs in the second and third innings to pull within 3-2, but W&L exploded for five runs in the sixth inning, including a three-run homerun by junior rightfielder Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights), to cap the scoring.

The Generals were led at the plate by junior righthander Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminter), who went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs. Garland finished 1-for-4 with the homerun and three RBI. On the mound, Edwards allowed two earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts in a complete game victory to improve to 6-0 on the season.

Senior centerfielder Steven Scott went 2-for-3 with a double and a run to lead the Hornets. Junior righthander Jason Kelly gave up six runs, five earned, on nine hits in 5.2 innings to take the loss (2-1).

In game two, Lynchburg jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second inning, including a pair of two-run singles by sophomore shortstop Ronnie LaBrie and senior third baseman Lucas Jones. The Hornets eventually pushed their advantage to 12-0 before W&L notched its only run on an RBI single by freshman Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) to score sophomore rightfielder James Madden (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) in the ninth inning.

McKelvey and senior second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal) both went 2-for-2. Junior lefthander Johnson Brownlow (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb) surrendered nine runs, five earned, on eight hits in 5.1 innings to suffer the loss (1-1).

For Lynchburg, LaBrie finished 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs and three RBI, while Jones went 1-for-2 with a run and two RBI. Senior righthander John Hines pitched a complete game allowing only one earned run on seven hits with seven strikeouts in the win (3-2).

W&L returns to the diamond on Tuesday when it hosts Bridgewater for a 3:00 pm contest.
