LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior midfielder Rachel Barr (Hanover, N.H.) scored a game-high five goals to help lead the 12th-ranked Williams women's lacrosse team to a 10-9 win over No. 17 Washington and Lee on Tuesday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Ephs (2-2) led 10-6 with 18:25 remaining in the game, but the Generals notched a pair of unassisted goals by senior attacker Kate Lester (Wilmington, Del./Friends) and junior midfielder Maggie Megear (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) to pull within 10-8 with 2:21 left. Junior attacker Avery Lovejoy (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) then scored off a feed from senior midfielder Louisa Feve (Bethesda, Md./Winston Churchill) with just 12 seconds remaining in the game to cut the deficit to 10-9 and despite winning the ensuing draw control, W&L was unable to score the tying goal.
The Generals (5-3) jumped out to a 1-0 at the 27:47 mark of the first half on an unassisted tally by Feve, but Barr found the back of W&L's net off an assist from junior defender Emily Gladden (Princeton, N.J.) at the 5:44 mark to tie the game at 1-1. Barr then scored her second goal of the contest off a free position shot with 17:56 left in the first half, but this time W&L responded to knot the game at 2-2 on an unassisted tally by Megear. Barr gave the Ephs a 3-2 advantage on a free position goal at the 14:51 mark to start a streak of five unanswered goals that would give Williams a 7-2 halftime lead.
W&L opened the second half on a free position goal by senior attacker Amanda Strickler (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) and an unassisted tally by Lester to get the Generals back within 7-4 with 24:55 left in the game, but Williams would notch three of the next five goals to push its lead to 10-6.
Megear finished with three goals and Lester added two scores. Feve added one goal and one assist, while sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Tilbor (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) made 10 saves.
Barr was aided by freshman midfielder Britt Spackman (Newton, Mass.), who had three goals and two assists. Senior goalkeeper Meghan Dwyer (Norwell, Mass.) stopped eight shots for the Ephs.
