W&L Baseball Defeats Roanoke, 6-4

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 5-4 lead en route to a 6-4 victory over Roanoke in ODAC baseball action on Thursday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

The Generals (12-4-1, 5-0) trailed 4-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but junior leftfielder David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) reached on a throwing error on Maroon senior third baseman Robbie Hoopes (Roanoke, Va./Northside). Senior second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal) then walked and Miller scored on an RBI single by junior designated hitter Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights). Gosselink and Garland moved up a base on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by junior catcher Jordan Wesley (Winston-Salem, N.C./R. J. Reynolds) plated Gosselink to tie the game at 4-4. Garland then scored the go-ahead run on an RBI triple by sophomore rightfielder James Madden (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park). W&L added an insurance run on an RBI single by Miller in the eighth inning.

The Generals took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Gosselink scored off an error, but Roanoke (7-9, 0-3) tied the game at 1-1 in the second frame on an RBI single by senior catcher Kirby Hamilton (Salem, Va./Salem). After each team plated a run in the fourth inning, the Maroons captured a 3-2 advantage in the fifth inning off a run scoring double by senior rightfielder Brandon Coates (Gladys, Va./William Campbell) and extended their lead to 4-2 in the seventh frame off an RBI single by Coates.

W&L was led at the plate by Madden, who batted 3-for-4 with a triple, a run and an RBI. Gosselink went 1-for-2 with a pair of runs. Sophomore righthander Steve Marcott (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) allowed an unearned run on three hits in two innings to pick up the win (2-0). Junior righthander Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) threw a scoreless ninth inning to earn his second save of the season.

For the Maroons, junior centerfielder Clint Zimmerman (Morgonton, N.C./Freedom) batted 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Coates finished 3-for-5 with a double, a run and two RBI. Junior righthander AJ Haynes (Salem, VA./Salem) allowed five runs, two earned, on six hits with five strikeouts in six innings to suffer the loss (2-1).

W&L returns to the diamond on Saturday when it travels to Virginia Wesleyan for a doubleheader. The first game begins at 12:00 pm.
