W&L Baseball Falls To No. 21 Mary Washington, 9-6

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior leftfielder Mike O'Donnell (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) batted 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI to help lead No. 21 Mary Washington to a 9-6 win over Washington and Lee in non-conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

The Eagles (12-1) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single by junior third baseman Chris Anderson (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County). The Generals (11-4-1) tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning on a run scoring single by senior second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal). W&L then plated a pair of runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-1 advantage.

However, UMW tallied three runs in the fifth inning, including a two-run double by O'Donnell, and scored three more runs in the sixth frame to push its lead to 7-3.

W&L cut the deficit to 7-6 with three tallies in the seventh inning, including a two-run single by junior designated hitter Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights), but the Eagles notched a pair of runs in the eighth inning en route to the 9-6 victory.

Garland finished 1-for-4 with two RBI, while junior third baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Sophomore lefthander John Parker (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) allowed six runs, five earned, on eight hits in five innings to suffer the loss (1-3).

O'Donnell was aided by senior first baseman Brandon Cole (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale), who batted 2-for-4 with a homerun and two RBI. Sophomore righthander Nate Hartman (Woodbridge, Va./Hylton) hurled the first six innings, giving up four earned runs on six hits to earn the win (1-0). Sophomore righthander Chase Townsend (Chesapeake, Va./Greenbriar Christian), who went 2-for-4 at the plate, pitched three scoreless innings to pick up the save.

W&L returns to the diamond on Thursday when it hosts Roanoke at 3:00 pm.
