LANCASTER, Pa. -- Thirteenth-ranked Franklin & Marshall jumped out to a 4-0 lead en route to a 13-10 victory over 12th-ranked Washington and Lee in women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon in Lancaster, Pa.
The Generals (3-2) got on the board with 14:07 left in the first half on a free-position goal by senior attackman Amanda Strickler (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County), but the Diplomats responded with two straight tallies for a 6-1 lead with 7:57 remaining in the half. Junior attacker Avery Lovejoy (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and senior attacker Kate Lester (Wilmington, Del./Friends) both also found the net before halftime, but another pair of Diplomat (1-0) goals produced an 8-3 halftime score.
Trailing 10-4 with 23:07 remaining, W&L mounted a rally by scoring three straight goals to slice to a 10-7 game. Senior midfielder Louisa Feve (Bethesda, Md./Winston Churchill) started the barrage with an unassisted goal, followed by an unassisted marker for Lester. Junior midfielder Kelly Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) then scored off an assist from freshman attacker Kelsi Robinson (West Chester, Pa./Westtown) at the 14:25 mark to cup the run.
F&M then went on a run of its own, scoring three of the game's next four goals, including a pair by senior attacker Kristen Foster, for a 13-8 lead. The Generals scored a pair of goals in the final 4:36, but could get no closer than the final margin.
W&L was paced by Lester's two goals, while Strickler, Lovejoy and Feve each had one goal and one assist. Sophomore Sarah Tilbor (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) and freshman Ali Hillyard (Media, Pa./Episcopal) both played in goal, combining to make 14 saves.
The Diplomats were led by junior midfielder Kelly Cassels and sophomore attacker Catherine Onnen, who posted two goals and one assist each. Senior Kamissa Mort logged nine stops in goal.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to Bridgewater for a 4:00 pm contest.
