LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore outfielder James Madden (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) went a combined 3-for-7 with a double, triple, and a homerun with two runs and six RBI to help lead the Washington and Lee baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of ODAC-rival Eastern Mennonite on Saturday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field. The Generals won the first game, 13-3, before taking the nightcap, 9-7.
In game one, W&L (11-3-1, 4-0) jumped out to a 5-0 after the first inning on an RBI double by junior rightfielder Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) and an inside-the-park grand slam by Madden. The Royals (4-10, 0-2) got a run back in the second inning on a solo homerun by senior leftfielder Kenny Riley (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Catholic), but the Generals tallied a run in the bottom of the third to take a 6-1 advantage.
W&L then scored two runs in the fifth inning and five more in the sixth inning, including RBI doubles by junior righthander Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminter) and junior catcher Jordan Wesley (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds), to extend its lead to 13-1 en route to the 10-run victory.
Madden finished 1-for-3 with the homerun and four RBI, while Edwards batted 2-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI and three runs. Edwards also gave up just five hits with seven strikeouts in a complete game victory (4-0).
The Royals were paced by Riley, who went 1-for-3 with the homerun. Junior lefthander Brandon Zollman (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) faced only five batters in the first inning, giving up five earned runs on three hits and two walks, to suffer the loss (1-2).
In game two, the Generals plated two runs in the first inning and five more in the second inning, including an RBI single by Garland and an RBI triple by Madden, to take a 7-0 lead. EMU cut the deficit to 7-2 with a pair of runs in the third inning, but the Generals notched two runs in the fourth inning on an RBI single by senior first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) and a sacrifice fly by Edwards to push its advantage to 9-2.
The Royals tallied two runs in the fifth and sixth innings and a single run in the seventh to cut the deficit to 9-7, but wouldn't be able to bring the tying run across home plate.
Madden went 2-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBI, while Garland batted 2-for-4 with a double, a run and two RBI. Junior lefthander Johnson Brownlow (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb) pitched the first 4.2 innings and gave up four runs, two earned, on six hits with three strikeouts. Freshman righthander Brendan Clark (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) allowed three runs, two earned, in 1.1 innings to earn the win (2-0), while sophomore righthander Steve Marcott (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) hurled three scoreless innings to pick up the save.
For the Royals, Riley went 2-for-5 with two RBI, while sophomore second baseman Jameson Jarvis (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) batted 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI. On the mound, senior righthander Drew Cobb (Staunton, Va./Wilson Memorial) allowed nine runs, five earned, on 11 hits in six innings to take the loss (1-2).
W&L returns to the diamond on Sunday when it hosts No. 21 Mary Washington for a 1:00 pm contest.
