WINCHESTER, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team limited Shenandoah to just five hits, but committed four errors, hit four batters and walked three more in falling to the Hornets, 6-2, on Wednesday afternoon.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when senior first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y/Vestal) led off the inning with a solo homerun to right field. However, the Hornets (6-1) responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame. After the first two hitters reached on a walk and hit-by-pitch, rightfielder Matt McCormick drove home one run with a single to center and the second run scored on a throwing error.
Shenandoah then assumed a 5-1 lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, scoring on a fielder's choice, a wild pitch and on a bunt.
The Generals (6-3-1) climbed to within 5-2 in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single to centerfield by junior leftfielder David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton), but the Hornets capped the scoring with a single run in the bottom of the frame on a solo homerun by designated hitter Steven Todd.
W&L was paced at the plate by Miller, who went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Sophomore rightfielder James Madden (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) also notched two hits in four at-bats. Sophomore John Parker (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) was saddled with the loss (0-2) after allowing just one hit and one earned run in four innings of work.
The Hornets were led at the plate by Todd's round-tripper. Taylor DuFrene picked up the win (2-0), allowing just two hits and one earned run in five innings.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it hosts Emory & Henry for a doubleheader starting at 12:00 pm.
