DEMOREST, Ga. -- Sophomore rightfielder James Madden (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) went 3-for-4 with a double, a homerun and three RBI to help lead the Washington and Lee baseball team to a season-opening 9-3 win over Piedmont on Monday afternoon in Demorest, Ga.
The Generals (1-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by senior first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) and a two-run double by junior designated hitter Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights).
W&L added a single run in the third inning and two more in the fourth on two-run double by senior second baseman Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal). The Lions (1-2) cut the deficit to 6-2 with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Generals scored two more runs in the fifth and one more in the seventh on Madden's homerun to close out the scoring.
Garland finished 2-for-5 with a double and two runs, while Gosselink went 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI and two stolen bases.
Junior pitcher Johnson Brownlow (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb) allowed two unearned runs on four hits and struck out four in four innings to pick up the win (1-0). Sophomore righthander Steve Marcott (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) also hurled four scoreless innings and struck out five batters.
Junior third baseman Stan Brosko went 5-for-5 with a run and an RBI to lead the Lions. Freshman pitcher Andy Graff gave up eight runs, seven earned, on seven hits in four innings to suffer the loss (0-1).
W&L returns to the diamond on Tuesday when it travels to Emory for a 2:00 pm contest.
