SALEM, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's basketball team won its first-ever game over Roanoke and snapped a 23-game losing streak to the Maroons in the process with a 78-70 victory in ODAC action on Saturday evening in Salem, Va.
Roanoke (9-9, 6-8) led 22-13 at the 9:39 mark of the first half, but the Generals (7-11, 5-9) chipped away to tie the game at 39-39 with 1:18 left. However, Roanoke regrouped to take a 44-42 lead into the break.
In the second half, W&L regained the advantage at 49-46 with 17:26 remaining, but the Maroons went on an 11-0 run to take a 57-49 edge at the 14:05 mark and held the lead until Generals' sophomore forward Kristen Krouchick (Holland, Pa./Nazareth Academy) hit a layup to give W&L a 61-60 edge at the 9:06 mark.
Roanoke trailed by one at 71-70 with 1:28 left, but couldn't regain the lead as W&L freshman guard Bethany Ridenhour (Westwood, N.J./Academy of the Holy Angels) went 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the final 1:05 to ice the win for the Generals.
The Generals shot a season-high 53.4 percent (31-of-58) from the floor, while Roanoke shot 50 percent (27-of-54) from the field.
W&L was led by junior center Jessica Hunsinger (Mayer, Ariz./The Orme School), who scored a team-high 21 points and pulled down a team-best seven rebounds. She also became just the sixth General to surpass the 1,000 point plateau. Senior guard Louisa Feve (Bethesda, Md./Winston Churchill) notched a season-high 20 points and a game-high six assists, while Krouchick and sophomore forward Amanda Kane (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson Secondary) each tallied 10 points.
Junior guard Cindy McGraw scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Maroons. Senior guard Lindsay Reynolds added 16 points and six boards.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Eastern Mennonite at 7:00 pm.
