LEXINGTON, Va. -- Lynchburg College collected 22 hits and scored 14 runs in a double header sweep of Washington and Lee in ODAC baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field. The Hornets won the first game, 4-2, and took the second game, 10-0.
In game one, Lynchburg (18-11, 10-3) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a RBI single by senior third baseman Sean Ranson (Tega Cay, S.C./Olengangy). The Generals (22-8, 9-6) tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI ground out by sophomore second baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oak Hill).
The Hornets plated single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to take a 3-1 lead, but W&L cut the deficit to 3-2 on an RBI ground out by junior first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) in the bottom of the sixth inning. However, Lynchburg tacked on an insurance run in the seventh en route to the 4-2 victory.
Miller finished 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while junior shortstop Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal) also went 1-for-3 with a triple and a run. On the mound, sophomore right hander Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) allowed three runs on five hits with three strikeouts in 5.1 innings to take theloss (6-3).
For the Hornets, senior left fielder Joey Arthur (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) went 2-for-4, while junior center fielder Steven Scott (Chesterfield, Va./Manchester) batted 1-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI. Sophomore right hander Jason Kelly (Colonial Heights, Va./Colonial Heights) gave up two runs on three hits and struck out four in the complete game victory (4-3).
In game two, Lynchburg scored four unearned runs in the third inning and never looked back in cruising to the 10-0 win. The Hornets tallied a single run in the sixth inning, two in the seventh, and three more in the eighth. Scott connected on a two-run single in the third inning and hit a solo home run in the seventh.
Gosselink led the Generals by going 2-for-4. Sophomore left hander Johnson Brownlow (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb) allowed five runs, only one earned, on eight hits and struck out five in 5.1 innings to suffer the loss (4-2).
Scott finished 3-for-4 with a run and four RBI, while sophomore right fielder Eric O'Brien (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) went 3-for-5 with a run. Sophomore right hander Kyle Utz (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) scattered five hits and struck out four in the complete game shut out (3-2).
W&L returns to the field on Monday, when it plays at Dickinson. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
