SALEM, Va. -- The fifth-seeded Washington and Lee baseball team dropped pair of games in the ODAC Tournament on Saturday at Salem Memorial Stadium in Salem, Va. The Generals fell to sixth-seeded Hampden-Sydney, 7-2, before losing to second-seeded Lynchburg, 8-6.
In the loss to H-SC, the Generals (26-12) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double by junior first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) and held the one-run lead until the third inning, when the Tigers (23-13) scored three runs. Freshman catcher Jason Bour hit an RBI double in the frame.
H-SC tacked on one run in the sixth and two more in the eighth to take a 6-1 advantage. W&L got one run back in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI single by sophomore designated hitter Jordan Wesley (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds). The Tigers ended the scoring with a run in the ninth inning.
The Generals were led by sophomore second baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton), who went 3-for-4 with a run. Wesley finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. On the mound, freshman left hander John Parker (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) allowed seven runs, five earned, on 17 hits with one strikeout in 8.2 innings to suffer his first loss of the season (4-1).
For the Tigers, sophomore right fielder John Apperson batted 4-for-5 with a double and two runs. Bour and junior center fielder Chris Padgett each went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Sophomore right hander Larry Greene gave up two runs on eight hits with three strikeouts in a complete game victory (6-2).
In the loss to Lynchburg, the Generals again took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by McConnell. The Hornets (27-14) tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning and then senior third baseman Sean Ranson's two-run single sparked a five run third inning, which gave Lynchburg a 6-1 lead.
The Generals trailed 8-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, but plated two runs in the frame on a two-run double by McConnell to make it 8-3. The score remained 8-3 until the bottom of the ninth inning when W&L made a late charge. The Generals scored three runs on an RBI single by senior catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) and a two-run double by Wesley, but the comeback fell short when Lynchburg senior right hander Eric Fitzsimmons struck out the final two W&L batters.
McConnell finished 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI, while Miller went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs. Senior right hander Brian Higgins (Centerville, Mass./Milton Academy) allowed seven runs on eight hits and struck out three in four innings to take the loss (3-2).
For the Hornets, Ranson batted 3-for-5 with a run and three RBI, while senior first baseman
Lucas Jones went 3-for-5 with two runs. Junior right hander John Hines gave up three runs on eight hits and struck out nine in seven innings to pick up the win (2-1). Fitzsimmons allowed one hit with two strikeouts in one inning of work to earn the save.
W&L returns to the field on Tuesday, when it hosts Bluefield College at 3:00 pm.
