SALEM, Va. -- Junior first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) went 3-for-5 with three doubles and four RBI to propel fifth-seeded Washington and Lee to a 9-8 win over fourth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan in game 6 of the ODAC Baseball Tournament on Friday evening at Salem Memorial Stadium in Salem, Va. McConnell now has 57 hits on the season, which is a new W&L single-season record.
The Generals (26-10) scored three runs in the sixth inning on a two-run double by McConnell and an RBI single by senior catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean). The Marlins (20-17) scored a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 6-6, but W&L scored three more runs in the seventh inning to take a 9-6 lead. McConnell had his second two-run double of the game in the inning.
Virginia Wesleyan plated two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to make it a 9-8 game with one of the runs coming on an RBI single by freshman Mike Dertouzos. In the bottom of the ninth inning, W&L freshman right hander Tim Livingston (Los Angeles, Calif./Santa Monica) struck out the first two Marlin batters, but then gave up a double to freshman Aswin Dhramapitaksook. However, Livingston induced freshman David Wicker into a ground out to second base to end the game.
Bausch finished 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while sophomore designated hitter Jordan Wesley (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) batted 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Livingston allowed two runs, both unearned, on three hits and struck out five over the final 3.1 innings to pick up the win (4-1). Sophomore left hander Johnson Brownlow (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb) started for the Generals and gave up six runs, five earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
For the Marlins, senior Brandon Hill batted 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI. Sophomore left hander David Imperato pitched the first 5.2 innings for Virginia Wesleyan and gave up six runs on 10 hits with five walks and six strikeouts. Junior right hander Zach Baker allowed two unearned runs in one inning of work to take the loss (0-6).
W&L returns to the diamond on Saturday when it plays sixth-seeded Hampden-Sydney at 11:00 am.
