W&L Baseball Edges Lynchburg, 12-10, In Odac Tournament

SALEM, Va. -- The fifth-seeded Washington and Lee baseball team took an 11-2 lead after six innings and held on for a 12-10 win over second-seeded Lynchburg in the first round of the ODAC Tournament at Salem Memorial Stadium in Salem, Va.

The Generals (25-10) held a 5-1 lead after five innings and exploded for six runs in the top of the sixth to take an 11-1 advantage. Senior third baseman Adam Bullock (Alexandria, Va./Gonzaga) smacked a two-run double in the frame. The Hornets got one run back in the bottom of the inning to make it an 11-2 game.

After the top of the seventh inning, a heavy rain ensued and there was about a 30 minute rain delay. Once the teams returned to the field, the Hornets (24-14) began to chip away at W&L's nine-run lead. Lynchburg plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on a homerun by senior first baseman Lucas Jones to make the score 11-4, but the Generals scored its 12th run in the eighth inning when senior left field Warren Hunter (Richmond,Va./Collegiate) scored on a wild pitch.

The Hornets then scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull within 12-9. Senior shortstop Sean Abell hit a two-run homerun and senior third baseman Sean Ranson drove in two runs on a double. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Lynchburg scored another run and had runners on first and second, but Jones flied out to Hunter to end the game.

Hunter finished 4-for-4 with two runs and three RBI, while sophomore designated hitter Jordan Wesley (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) went 3-for-6 with a double, two runs and two RBI. Sophomore right hander Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) allowed two runs on 11 hits and struck out three in six innings to pick up the win (7-4). Freshman right hander Tim Livingston (Los Angeles, Calif./Santa Monica) pitched 2/3 of an inning to earn his second save of the season.

For the Hornets, senior left fielder Joey Arthur batted 4-for-6 with a double and two runs, while junior second baseman Josh Walker went 4-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Senior right hander Matt Gouker allowed two runs on five hits in three innings to take the loss (10-3) and sophomore right hander Kyle Utz surrendered eight runs on eight hits in two innings.

W&L returns to the diamond on Friday when they play the winner of the game between third-seeded Guilford and fourth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan at 7:00 pm.
