GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Sophomore center fielder Fred Parent went a combined 7-for-7 with a double, a home run and four runs to help lead Guilford to a double header sweep of Washington and Lee in ODAC baseball action on Saturday afternoon in Greensboro, N.C. The Quakers won the first game, 3-1 and took the second game, 16-4.
In game one, Guilford (23-13, 12-6) broke open a scoreless game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single by junior right fielder Jeff Arzonico and a sacrifice fly by junior catcher Andrew Lerner. The Quakers tacked on their third run in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Parent. The Generals (24-10, 10-8) scored their only run on a sacrifice fly by sophomore right fielder Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) in the seventh inning.
W&L was led by junior shortstop Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal), who batted 4-for-4 with a run scored. Junior first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) went 2-for-4. Sophomore right hander Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) allowed three runs on six hits with two strikeouts in six innings to take the loss (6-4).
Sophomore designated hitter Brian Burton finished 2-for-3 with a run, while Parent went 2-for-2 with a home run. On the mound, sophomore right hander Logan Collier gave up 10 hits and walked four, but only allowed one run in a complete game victory (6-4).
In game two, the Generals trailed 2-0 after two innings, but plated three runs in the top of the third to take a 3-2 lead. Gosselink smacked a two-run double in the frame. In the bottom of the inning, the Quakers exploded for nine runs on only five hits, but were aided by five W&L errors.
W&L got one run back in the fourth inning on an RBI single by senior left fielder Chris Chaplin (Midlothian, Va./James River), but Guilford plated two runs in the bottom of the inning and three more in the sixth inning to finish off the scoring en route to the 16-4 win.
Gosselink went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, while Chaplin batted 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore left hander Johnson Brownlow (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb) allowed 11 runs, only two earned, on nine hits in three innings to suffer the loss (4-3).
Parent went 5-for-5 with a double, RBI and three runs, while junior first baseman Rob Bittner batted 4-for-5 with a run and three RBI. Sophomore right hander Dave Whigham surrendered four runs, two earned, on five hits and struck out seven in five innings to pick up the win (6-2).
W&L returns to the field on Thursday in the opening round of the ODAC Tournament in Salem, Va. Time and opponent are still to be determined.
