SALEM, Va. -- Sophomore right fielder Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) went 4-for-5 with three doubles and three RBI to help lead Washington and Lee to a 9-5 victory over Roanoke in ODAC baseball action on Friday afternoon in Salem, Va.
The game was scoreless heading into the fourth inning, but the Generals (24-8, 10-6) exploded for four runs in the inning. Junior first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) and Garland each connected on RBI doubles in the frame.
W&L added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 6-0 lead, but the Maroons (11-15, 7-7) plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 6-4 game. Junior catcher Brandon Wilson smacked a two-run double in the inning.
W&L responded with three runs in the top of the seventh to push its lead back to five runs at 9-4. Garland recorded his second RBI double of the game in the inning.
Roanoke scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI single by freshman right fielder Matt Vess to make the final score 9-5.
McConnell finished 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI. He now has 17 doubles on the season, which is a new single-season record. Senior left fielder Warren Hunter (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) batted 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run. On the mound, freshman left hander John Parker (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) allowed five runs, two earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts in eight innings to pick up the win (4-0).
For the Maroons, Wilson went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs and two RBI, while freshman second baseman Brennan Thacker batted 2-for-5 with a double and a run. Sophomore right hander Jonathan Wills allowed four runs on six hits in 3.1 innings to take the loss (3-5).
W&L returns to the field on Saturday, when it plays a double header at Guilford. The first game starts at 1:00 pm.
