W&L Baseball Shuts Out Villa Julie, 14-0

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) went 3-for-6 with two doubles, a homerun, and five RBI to help lead the Washington and Lee baseball team to their 11th consecutive victory with a 14-0 shutout win over Villa Julie on Monday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

The Generals (13-2) jumped on the board with three first inning runs. McConnell blasted a two-run home run to begin the scoring and tacked on their third run on an RBI single by sophomore catcher Jordan Wesley (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds).

W&L scored another run in the second and three more in the third on a three-run double by McConnell.

The Generals put two more across home plate in the sixth, three more in the seventh, and closed out the scoring with two runs in the eighth inning.

W&L pounded out 18 hits, including seven extra base hits, and were also aided by four Villa Julie errors.

McConnell was complemented by Wesley, who finished 4-for-5 with a double, two runs, and three RBI. Senior catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) and sophomore designated hitter Phil Cossich (Belle Chasse, La./Isidore Newman) each collected two hits.

On the mound, freshman right hander Steve Marcott (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) scattered four hits and struck out four over six scoreless innings to pick up the win (2-1).

The Mustangs (2-3) were led by senior second baseman Anthony DeFrancisco, who went 2-for-4, while junior third baseman Matt Waltrop batted 1-for-3 with a double. Sophomore right hander Gary Sanders gave up seven runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 2.2 innings to suffer the loss (1-1).

W&L returns to the field on Thursday when it hosts Southern Virginia. The game begins at 3:00 pm.
