EMORY, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team swept a doubleheader from ODAC-rival Emory & Henry on Sunday afternoon in Emory, Va. The Generals won the opener, 4-3 and took the second game, 7-3.
In game one, W&L (12-2, 2-0) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when junior first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) singled home junior shortstop Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal).
The Generals extended their lead to 4-0 after scoring three runs in the fifth inning. With two outs, McConnell hit an RBI single to drive home junior center fielder Dave Mackenzie (Vienna, Va./James Madison). W&L then scored a pair of unearned runs on a error by Wasps' right fielder Chuck Hewitt.
E&H (2-7, 0-2) hit a pair of home runs in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 4-3, but wouldn't be able to push the tying run across home plate.
W&L sophomore righthander Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) allowed four hits and struck out six in pitching his second complete game of the season to improve to 3-1. McConnell batted 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run, while senior third baseman Adam Bullock (Alexandria, Va./Gonzaga) went 2-for-3 at the plate.
For the Wasps, junior designated hitter Casey Burcham went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and a run, while senior righthander Michael Woodford allowed nine hits, four runs, and struck out four over seven innings to take the loss (0-3).
In game two, the game was tied 1-1 after four innings and then a two-run home run by McConnell in the fifth inning gave the Generals a 3-1 lead. E&H got one run back in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-2, but W&L pushed one run across the plate in the sixth and then three more in the seventh to take a commanding 7-2 advantage. In the seventh inning, Generals' senior catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) smacked a two-run double and then scored on a wild pitch to give W&L its seventh run.
McConnell batted 4-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and two runs, while Bausch went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs, and two RBI. Sophomore lefthander Johnson Brownlow (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb) allowed two runs on five hits and struck out six in five innings to pick up the win (2-0). Freshman pitcher Tim Livingston (Los Angeles, Calif./Santa Monica) gave up one run on three hits over the final four innings to earn the save.
Hewitt and freshman shortstop Gavin Haynes each went 2-for-4 for the Wasps. Sophomore southpaw Adam Hall surrendered four runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings to suffer the loss (1-1).
W&L returns to the diamond on Monday when it hosts Villa Julie. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
