LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore shortstop Chance Dobbs (Alleghany, Va./Alleghany) singled home sophomore left fielder Justin Showalter (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) with one out in the top of the ninth inning to give Bridgewater a 3-2 victory over Washington and Lee in ODAC baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Generals (22-6, 9-4) had the bases loaded with one out, but were unable to score the tying run.
The game was scoreless heading into the sixth inning, but the Eagles (12-11-1, 5-3) struck for two runs in the top of the sixth on RBI doubles by senior second baseman Tracy Wagner (Verona, Va./Fort Defiance) and Showalter.
W&L tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Sophomore second baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oak Hill) led off the inning with a single and was driven home on a double by junior shortstop Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal). With one out, Gosselink advanced to third on a wild pitch by Eagles' freshman right hander Nolan Shaffer (Hegins, Pa./Tri-Valley) and then tied the game on another wild pitch by Schaffer, which set up the opportunity for Dobbs game-winning hit in the ninth inning.
Miller finished the game 2-for-5 with a run, while Gosselink batted 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Junior first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) also went 1-for-4 with a double. It was his 15th double of the season, which tied the W&L single-season record.
On the mound, sophomore left hander Johnson Brownlow (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb) started for the Generals and allowed no runs on three hits with two strikeouts in 3.2 innings. Sophomore right hander Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) surrendered one run on three hits with four strikeouts in the final three innings to take the loss (6-2).
Bridgewater was led by Showalter, who went 2-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI. Dobbs also went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore right hander Ricky Read (Goode, Va./Brookeville) pitched the first seven innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Shaffer gave up no runs on one hit with a walk and a strikeout in one inning of work to pick up the win (2-2).
W&L returns to the field on April 9, when it hosts Lynchburg for a double header. The first game starts at 12:00 pm.
