LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team split a double header with ODAC-rival Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field. The Generals won the first game, 3-2, but dropped the nightcap 5-3.
In game one, the Marlins (11-11, 5-3) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on RBI singles by senior shortstop Brandon Hill (Norfolk, Va./Granby) and senior right fielder Colin Roberson (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial).
The Generals (22-5, 9-3) scored all of their runs in the fourth inning en route to the 3-2 victory. Senior catcher Zach Bausch (Vienna, Va./McLean) led off the inning with a single and scored on an RBI double by sophomore designated hitter Jordan Wesley (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds). Senior third baseman Adam Bullock (Alexandria, Va./Gonzaga) followed with a single and then with two outs, advanced to third on an RBI single by sophomore second baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oak Hill), which brought home Wesley. Bullock then scored the game-winning run on an RBI single by junior shortstop Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal).
Miller finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Bullock went 2-for-3 with a run. On the mound, sophomore right hander Clayton Edwards (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) pitched his team-leading fifth complete game of the year and improved to 6-1. He allowed two earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts.
Virginia Wesleyan was led by Hill and Roberson, who each batted 1-for-3 with an RBI. Senior right hander Jason Jarrett (Westminster, Md./Westminster) also hurled a complete game and gave up three earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts to take the loss (2-3).
In game two, the Marlins exploded for four runs in the first inning to take the 5-3 win. With Virginia Wesleyan leading 1-0, Roberson smacked a two-run triple to give the Marlins a 3-0 lead.
W&L got one run back in the third inning and plated two more in the fourth to get within 4-3. In the fifth, Wesley and Bullock both had RBI ground outs.
Virginia Wesleyan closed out the scoring with a single run in the sixth inning.
The Generals were led by Bullock and Gosselink, who each went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore left hander Johnson Brownlow (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb) allowed five runs on seven hits and struck out two in six innings to suffer the loss (4-1).
Sophomore third baseman Mike Cardwell (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) went 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Marlins, while Roberson went 1-for-4 with a triple and two RBI. Sophomore southpaw David Imperato (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan) gave up three runs on five hits and struck out seven in a complete game victory (4-1).
W&L returns to the diamond on Wednesday when it hosts Bridgewater at 3:00 pm.
