W&L Baseball Edges Shenandoah, 8-7, In 13 Innings

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior shortstop Scott Gosselink (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal) singled home junior center fielder Dave Mackenzie (Vienna, Va./James Madison) with one out in the bottom of the 13th inning to lift the Washington and Lee baseball team to an 8-7 victory over Shenandoah on Tuesday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

The Generals (20-4) jumped out to a 6-3 lead after four innings, but the Hornets (13-9) scored three runs in the fifth inning to tie the game at 6-6.

Shenandoah then took a 7-6 lead in the top of the sixth inning when junior center fielder Scott Disch (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) reached on a fielder's choice to bring home junior right fielder Matt McCormick (Glen Burnie, Md./Anne Arundel CC). W&L responded to knot the game at 7-7 in the bottom of the inning when sophomore second baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oak Hill) scored on an RBI ground out by junior first baseman Taylor McConnell (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal).

Neither team would be able to cross home plate again until the Generals struck for the game-winning run in the bottom of the 13th inning. Mackenzie led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Miller. Gosselink then roped a single past Hornets' sophomore shortstop Daniel Bowers (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) to bring home Mackenzie and give 19th year head coach Jeff Stickley his 250th victory at the helm of the Generals.

Gosselink finished 4-for-6 with two doubles and two RBI, while McConnell batted 3-for-6 with a double and two RBI. Senior right hander Brian Higgins (Centerville, Mass./Milton Academy) started for W&L and allowed seven runs, only two earned, on eight hits with two strikeouts in seven innings. Freshman right hander Steve Marcott (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) scattered five hits with three strikeouts in six shutout innings to pick up the win (3-1).

For the Hornets, sophomore first baseman Adam Duckett (Broad Run, Va./Fauquier) went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while McCormick batted 3-for-6 with an RBI and a run. Shenandoah starter, freshman left hander Drew Dobbins (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro), allowed six runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings and junior right hander Nick Sborz (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) gave up one run on three hits over the final five innings to suffer the loss (0-1).

W&L returns to the diamond tomorrow when it plays at Bridgewater. The first pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
