W&L Women's Lacrosse Edges Mary Washington, 7-6

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Junior midfielder Kate Lester (Wilmington, Del./Friends) scored a game-high four goals to help lead 18th-ranked Washington and Lee to a 7-6 victory over 11th-ranked Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va.

The Eagles (5-2) took a 3-1 lead at the 16:14 mark of the first half on goals by freshman midfielders Caitlin Erickson and Julia Durkin and sophomore midfielder Jackie Rose. The Generals (6-1) responded to score the next three goals, including two by Lester, to take a 4-3 lead into halftime.

W&L tallied the first three goals of the second half to extend to a 7-3 with 15:10 remaining in the game. Sophomore midfielder Maggie Megear (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) notched two of the three goals. Mary Washington pulled to within 7-6 at the 6:32 mark on a goal by Erickson, but they wouldn't be able to score the equalizer.

Megear finished with three goals, while sophomore attacker Avery Lovejoy (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and senior midfielder Erin Rathbone (Darnestown, Md./Northwest) each recorded an assist. Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Tilbor (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) made 11 saves.

Erickson led the Eagles with three goals, while freshman Meredith Deitrick stopped six shots in net.

The Generals return to the field on Tuesday when they host Bridgewater. The game begins at 4:00 pm.
