GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore attacker Avery Lovejoy (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) tied a career-high with five goals to help lead 18th-ranked Washington and Lee to a 13-4 victory over Guilford in ODAC women's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon in Greensboro, N.C.
Junior defender Kate Lester (Wilmington, Del./Friends) scored three consecutive goals to give the Generals (5-1, 2-0) a 3-0 lead with 22:53 remaining in the first half. The Quakers (2-2, 0-1) pulled to within 3-1 on a goal by freshman attacker Mary Hutchins at 20:45, but W&L scored the next four goals to take an 8-1 advantage. Lovejoy scored two of her goals during the spurt.
Guilford answered with three straight goals to cut the deficit to 8-4 with 3:29 left in the first half, but sophomore midfielder Mallory Lobisser (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Lakeside) tallied an unassisted goal at the 1:27 mark to give W&L a 9-4 advantage heading into halftime.
The Generals took a 10-4 lead on a goal by sophomore midfielder Kelly Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) at the 27:24 mark of the second half, before Lovejoy notched the final three W&L goals.
The game was then called due to inclement weather with 9:43 remaining in the second half.
Lester finished with three goals, while Evans totaled two goals and an assist. Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Tilbor (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) made three saves.
Guilford was led by freshman attacker Jordan Clodfelter, who tallied two goals and Hutchins finished with a goal and an assist. Freshman Devorah Litt made seven saves in goal.
The Generals return to the field on Saturday when they play at Mary Washington. The game begins at 2:00 pm.
