LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore first baseman Nathan Unroe (Iron Gate, Va./Alleghany) went 3-for-5 with two RBI to help lead Roanoke to a 3-1 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
The Maroons (4-9, 1-2) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Unroe singled home freshman second baseman Brennan Thacker (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest). Roanoke tacked on its second run in the fifth inning on another RBI single by Unroe, and plated its third run in the sixth inning on an RBI double by junior third baseman Kirby Hamilton (Salem, Va./Salem).
The Generals (17-4, 5-2) cut the deficit to 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning when sophomore right fielder Richard Garland (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) singled home sophomore second baseman David Miller (Oak Hill, Va./Oak Hill).
W&L had two runners on base in the eight inning and one runner on in the ninth, but was unable to bring any more runs across home plate.
The Generals were led by Miller, who went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Garland batted 1-for-4 with an RBI. On the mound, senior right hander Brian Higgins (Centerville, Mass./Milton Academy) allowed two earned runs on eight hits over five innings to take the loss (2-1).
Unroe was aided by Thacker, who batted 2-for-5 with a double and two runs. Sophomore left hander Chase Davidson (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) gave up just one run on five hits and struck out three in seven innings to pick up the win (3-2). Sophomore right hander Jonathan Wills (Salem, Va./Salem) pitched the final two innings to earn the save.
W&L returns to the diamond on Saturday when it plays a double header at Eastern Mennonite. The first game begins at 12:00 pm.
